DESCRIPTION
We offer production of large scale murals in a completely innovative way. For this we are using a one-of-a-kind robot nicknamed Albert we developed ourselves. Robot Albert is operated without scaffolding or manlift. It is an ideal tool for large scale mural projects, within a single 8 hour workday it can effortlessly cover a 240 square meter wall with intricate full color design. Albert features an optical system that detects the printhead position within 5mm margin and ensures a correct placement of each paint dot (dotsel). Albert is moved across the wall by kevlar cables in a cable-robot style method
TECHNOLOGY AND WORKFLOW
Albert is a unique mural printing robot that creates large scale, full resolution, full color images on almost any surface. The method of printing is different from other types of wall printers as Albert uses spray paint instead of ink to create the image. Spray paint is much more durable and efficient to use outdoors. The printhead prints 5 different tones simultaneously and creates full color images by optically blending them into a vast spectrum. To move the printhead across the wall it uses two kevlar cables in a cable-robot style method. This is a very scalable method and there are no practical limits for the wall size. The whole equipment fits into travel cases and can efficiently travel across the globe together with the two men team.
The workflow on site is composed of the rigging day and the printing day (usually separated into two individual days). The rigging day is used to rig the anchor towers onto the roof of the building. The anchor towers are made of aluminium and specially designed and tested for safe operation and the team has a special training and licence for high altitude rigging. On the next day the printing operation can take place. Printhead is hooked up to the kevlar cables that will move it across the print area and a tracking camera is placed 10..20 meters from the wall to track the position of the printhead throughout the process. Printing speed is around 30 square meters per hour and is dependent on the required result, surface absorbency and other factors. The print area needs to be completely visible to the tracking camera and needs to be obstruction free to allow free movement of the cables.
The exact printable area of each wall is determined by the team, it is possible to work around some obstructions but this adds to the complicity. We have special methods and equipment to print complicated walls as well. Contact our specialists at info@robotmuralist.com to start your mural project.
THE ART
As the technology used to create these murals is profoundly different from classical methods the result is also unique. The murals are composed of 8mm dots of 5 different colors, if you observe from close distance you can clearly see the individual dots and might even find it hard to understand what is pictured. Only if you look from further and allow the dots to optically blend you see the image.
HISTORY AND BACKGROUND
Robot Muralist is a company created by inventor Mihkel Joala in 2016. It started off as just a unique style in street art but quickly became a new type of muralism. After perfecting the robot, Mihkel started offering the Albert mural service and traveling the world together with robot Albert. Through the years hundreds of mural projects have been executed across the globe. One of the largest projects being a massive 7000 square meter art project executed in 2024. Today Albert has remained the only robot in the world to print murals with this method and Robot Muralist the only company to offer this service. Robot Muralist is a family operated company, all projects are handled by Mihkel and his wife Kerttu. Albert is still under development but 2024 saw a major update as Albert 2.0 rolled out. The new iteration featured a visual tracking system to improve accuracy as well as sophisticated paint managing system to offload operator labour and speed up workflow.
